What is the origin of Shrove Tuesday? Shrove is the past tense of the word shrive, which means to present oneself to a priest for confession, penance, and absolution. Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday marked the day before people began to fast for Lent to gain penance from God. Many Christians observe Lent through service, sacrifice, and self-examination. Pancakes were historically eaten because they were a way to make use of the rich foods people had before they went bad during the long fast.
