Aces High Bridge Club
This group meets every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Monday in the Westminster Lounge at 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. for lively games of bridge. All bridge players are welcome. At each meeting, each member pays $2 to covers costs, with the balance helping to cover some of the cost of a Christmas luncheon in December and a Pizza Lunch the first Monday in June. The Club invites Clergy and Staff to these celebrations.
Advent Luncheon and Craft
St. James marks the beginning of Advent with a Fellowship Luncheon after the 10:30 Sunday Service. Delicious food is followed by a craft activity, such as making Advent wreathes for use at home.
Anglican Church Women (A.C.W.)
Three executive members invite volunteers to help prepare funeral luncheons or teas, teas for special events, and the annual Vestry luncheon. They put on bake-sales throughout the year as well and invite parishioners to add to the lovely array of baked goods, preserves, and frozen dinner and luncheon items. The proceeds from the sales go to support our Outreach projects in London and abroad.
Our St. James book club has been going strong for many years. The club has a convener who selects the books and leads the group in lively and thoughtful discussion. The club meets at 1:30 on the third Wednesday of the month September to June, in the Westminster Lounge.
The Fun and Fellowship Committee organizes a variety of events throughout the year, sometimes on Friday evenings, sometimes on Saturdays or after the 10:30 service on Sunday. Watch for more news about fun fund-raising events to support our Outreach Committee’s ministry.
This team of green-thumb gardeners tends the many planters and gardens around the church and on the church grounds, getting them ready in the spring, tending them through to late fall, and putting the beds to rest for the winter. The team also maintains a small Pet Cemetery presided over by a statue of St. Francis of Assisi, lover of all creatures great and small.
The Green Team
The Green Team advocates for, educates, and facilitates actions to help every person at St. James be a good caretaker of creation. Their mission is to contribute to a greener, healthier, more equitable world. The team reviewed our energy and materials use to help us find ways to use resources wisely, e.g. switching to LED lights, using recycled paper, rerouting our heating system to be more efficient, putting heat miser automatic timers on both heating systems, installing double-glazed low-E window units in the Church Hall, establishing a composter behind the shed, and eliminating pesticide use property-wide. Each year, the Green Team rallies parishioners to join ReForest London for a day of tree-planting and interfaith fellowship and food.
Guess Who’s Coming to Lunch
To help us all get to know one another better, and to honour the world-wide community-building practice of breaking bread together, the Fun and Fellowship Committee organizes a “Guess Who’s Coming to Lunch” event in Spring or Fall. Several Parishioners volunteer to be hosts and to welcome from 6 to 12 fellow Parishioners to gather at their home for a potluck lunch, great conversation, and lots of laughs after the 10:30 service.
Music in the Garden
Our Music Director, Steve Holowitz, organizes evening concerts in our beautiful Memorial Garden on Monday evenings in July, 7:30-8:30 pm. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy. All welcome!
This group seeks out bargains on coffee, tea, milk, and other supplies for Sunday coffee hours, and parish luncheons and dinners. They prepare the food for events, such as “Round-Up Sunday”, our Advent Luncheon, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, and the June Outdoor Service and Parish Picnic. They also support events put on by other committees, like the Fun and Fellowship Committee and the Outreach Committee.
St. James invites the community to join with Parishioners in marking the beginning of Lent by sharing a Pancake and Sausage Supper on Shrove Tuesday each year. The cost is low and the food is plenty. In spite of wild winter weather, the 2016 supper fed 180 people!
On the first Sunday after Labour Day, St. James parishioners share a fellowship luncheon after the 10:30 service, followed by workshops and the opportunity to select volunteer opportunities for the year ahead.
Welcome Committee and Connectors
This group assists new Parishioners to get oriented to the Church and to meet fellow parishioners. They work with the Wardens, the Rector and the Rector’s family to host a Newcomer’s Luncheon once a year and they invite newcomers to learn about our various ministries, committees, and teams so they can decide where best to put their time and talents as church members.
