Kids Camino

JFamily Ministry

Welcome! Kids’ Camino is a new ministry at St. James Westminster.

Kids’ Camino is a time for children to learn about the Christian faith in a safe and accepting environment. We explore our world together, learning about God’s unending love for all creation. We will also experiment with different practices (meditation, prayer beads, movement, singing) to help us navigate the modern world, which can be loud and confusing so much of the time.

Why “camino”?

“Camino” is Spanish for path. There is a network of paths all over Europe that leads to the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. These paths are referred to as the “Camino de Santiago” or the Way of St. James. Since the 9th century, pilgrims or travelers have walked these paths for many reasons: to ask God for forgiveness, when seeking wisdom or an answer to a question, and sometimes for a vacation! We have chosen to call our program Kids’ Camino to remind ourselves that faith is a journey with many twists and turns.

What will my child experience at the program?

Every Wednesday during the school year, we gather at 6:00 pm in the Westminster Room. We have supper and then begin our programming for the evening.

Our program centers on a story. The stories are usually from the bible, but we also use other stories that help us to learn about God or our world. During our time together, we have different centers – sometimes baking, sometimes art, sometimes drama – that allow us to explore the story in meaningful ways. Each week will close with another time of prayer and song before parents pick the children up at 7:30 pm.

We hope that everyone involved in the program, children and adults alike, will learn about God’s incredible love for all people.
